extended Hybrid Family
2019
Smrekar carried out the Hybrid Family project (2015/2016) at the residence of the Freies Museum in Berlin, where in a three-month seclusion (October 2015 - January 2016), she prepared her body to start secreting hormone prolactin in order to produce milk in her breasts to feed the puppy Ada, whose arrival was aligned with the project timeline. In doing so, she demonstrated that a body does not necessarily need reproductive organs to produce milk, and that, futhermore - any body, regardless of gender, could be prepared for such a process. The public presentation in Berlin took place in the form of pre-announced visits for the visitors to have a conversation with the artist and to witness her family life.
The idea for a series of projects, which would not only show documentation of the Hybrid Family performance, but would temporarily address the hybridity of the notion of the modern family in the extended format, came to light in 2019, when the opportunity arose at a residency in Zagreb, Croatia. After several weeks of preparations for the “Extravagant Bodies” Festival at the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum (curated by Stahl Stenslie, Klara Petrovic, Luja Simunovic), Smrekar designed an installation and, during the five days of the festival (17th - 22nd September 2019), she executed a performance titled extended Hybrid Family.
Here, too, the two rooms were equipped into living quarters adapted for dogs and humans, while the public presentation took place during the museum's opening hours. In cooperation with the Indigo Animal Welfare and Protection Society, Smrekar temporarily adopted three 6-week-old puppies, who were found motherless in Slavonia a few days earlier. This time Smrekar and, by now the adult Ada - took care of the puppies together. When the puppies needed a rest, Ada and the artist retreated to another room, which was also part of the installation space, where Smrekar was creating a gobelin made of wool hair obtained from the Opus et Domus performance.
In an agreement with the veterinarian, the organizers of the “Extravagant Bodies” Festival and the Indigo Society organized a public campaign during the performance days to help the puppies find a suitable home, which they succeeded during the festival. Due to the enormous interest of the public, the association managed to find a home for the remaining 9 puppies from the same litter in the next two weeks.
The whole set-up for the coexistence of humans and animals, as well as the idea of a temporary custody thus addressed the hybridity of the notion of the modern family in an extended sense.
