SPASM
2024
An ongoing new work has been created in response to a world dominated by constant emergencies, global terror, relentless surveillance and pervasive fear, SPASM examines how these forces corrode human connection. The concept of death is central to this exploration - seen as the final space of personal autonomy, uncolonised by Capitalism. Death’s inescapable finality, a reality that technology, with its potential for immortality, cannot truly grasp is entangled with humanity’s deep-rooted longing for eternal life as an increasing promise of technological advances. Scanned by 234 cameras, Smrekar immerses herself into a hyper-detailed digital reality where she approaches death as a point of departure for rethinking empathy, identity, and belonging.
