ABOUT
Maja Smrekar's (SI) work has been established in the international art and science milieu. Her practice has allowed her to lead collaborations in developing cross-conceptual productions that include performances, installations, site-specific art, videos, workshops, lectures, talks, and texts. She’s been using her artistic voice to speak o ecofeminism, inter-species relationships, technology and ideologycal structures in society. Her work has been exhibited and presented at fine arts and media arts museum contexts, among them MAXXI - National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome (Italy), ZKM Karlsruhe (Germany), Musée de l`Homme (Paris, France), Vienna Art Week, (Austria), Het Neuwe Institut (Rotterdam, The Netherlands), National Museum of Contemporary Art in Riga (Latvia); art spaces Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing, China; Zuercher Gallery, New York, USA; RMIT Gallery Melbourne, Australia. She has been collaborating with the L'internationale platform consisting of the following European museums: Museum of Contemporary Art Ljubljana (MG + MSUM, Ljubljana, Slovenia); Museum Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain); MACBA - Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Spain); Museum Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen (Belgium); Museum of Modern Art Warsaw (Poland), SALT (Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey) and Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven, The Netherlands). She has been an artistic associate of various production platforms, such as Quo Artis Foundation (ES/IT), The Culture Yard (DK), Kapelica Gallery (SI), Cultivamos Cultura (PT), etc. Among other awards Smrekar received the Golden Nica Award in the Hybrid Art category of the Prix Ars Electronica in 2017 (Ars Electronica Festival, Linz, Austria) and Prešeren Foundation Award 2018, the highest national award for artistic achievements in the Republic of Slovenia.
